Elysian Fields-Revisited - This comes from of course from the Ancient Greek story about a heaven for the non-gods but heroic humans. Elysian Fields (Ancient Greek: Ἠλύσιον πεδίον, Ēlýsion pedíon), Elysian Plains or Elysian Realm, is a conception of the afterlife that developed over time and was maintained by some Greek religious and philosophical sects and cults.
It was initially separated from the Greek underworld – the realm of Hades. Only mortals related to the gods and other heroes could be admitted past the river Styx. Later, the conception of who could enter was expanded to include those chosen by the gods, the righteous, and the heroic. They would remain at the Elysian Fields after death, to live a blessed and happy afterlife, and indulge in whatever they had enjoyed in life/ from wikipedia.
Maria Finn was invited to Elysian Fields, the exhibition that took place at the Centre Pompidou, Paris in 2000. This exhibition was curated by Olivier Zahm and Elein Fleiss who are known for their creation Purple (magazine, institute, books). The exhibition was a rather (according to the contemporary critique) a lovely and confusing odyssey through art, music, fashion and counterculture, quite an ambitious display including masters like Gerhard Richter, Andrea Zittel, Vija Celmins, Ange Leccia and Richard Prince among others and also a handful och Scandinavian artists mixed with a list of artists that emerged during the 90's: Maria Finn, Torbjörn Rødland, Anders Edström. The four of you comes from a similar time as many of the artists in that exhibition, the 1990's, a lot has happened 25 years later. We are thrilled to see what this exhibition could lead us to.
The title is of course very high brow and sounds a bit elitist but on the other hand it is a good story and quite poetic. It can be applied to anything even when using the frenchname Champ- Élysées which is the famous boulevard in Paris displaying fast-food palaces and shopping malls. The high and the low, the good and the bad. This will be a totally new angle and outlook and from your standpoint, an exhibition in its own right.
