Hammer Chen is a printmaking artist based in Shanghai and Bristol. She graduated from UWE Bristol with an MA in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking.
Hammer’s work is informed by the idea of memory, travel, and arousing a nostalgic sense through cinematic imagery. She explores how to best echo the transformation from factual documentation to personal perception, through the manipulation of photography on a printmaking matrix. Her images are not only of a lived reality: they are imagined memories rebuilt from collective experiences. Hammer starts from a photographic archive or subjects she is repeatedly drawn to — the light in the dark, the potential interaction of characters. The images are like scenes from a stage set, portraying a reimagining of past times and spaces.
In 2021, she was nominated for the Queen Sonja Print Award. Recently, she received the Creativity Award from The Royal West of England Academy and the Bainbridge Print Prize from the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair.

"Next Century 2" is a project run by Grafik i Väst and work shops in Region Västra Götaland.
The project started in 2016 under the name "Grafikseklet" and was an collection of swedish fine art graphics for a hundred years. A few yers later "Next Century" was up and running. This time the gallery colaborated with printmakers from south China. We arranged workshops for them and an exhibition tour in VGR.
Grafik i Väst (GiV) är en ideell organisation för grafiker och har till uppgift att ställa ut och sälja medlemmarnas konstverk, och initiera och stödja olika slags samarbete som syftar till att stärka situationen och förutsättningarna för konstgrafiken. Detta arbete medfinansieras av Region Västra Götaland.
Föreningen bildades hösten 1991 och under våren 1992 öppnade galleriet. 1996 hade vi vuxit ur våra lokaler på Västergatan och vi flyttade in på nuvarnade adress, Storgatan 20. Sedan dess har vi hunnit med otaliga projekt och samarbeten, förutom våra egna utställningar. Senaste åren har vi arbetat med kinesiska grafiker, som fått tillgång till flera grafiska verkstäder i Västra Götalandsregionen och från Litauen, vars grafik vi kunnat ställa ut på galleriet.
